Inside Sidi Moumen

Sidi Moumen, an urban district in the South Eastern periphery of Casablanca, is internationally known for its squalid living conditions, dangerous criminal activity and as a hotbed for “fundamentalist” groups in the Maghreb. This project investigates the socio-economic conditions of two adjacent slums in Sidi Moumen, Douar Rhamna and Karyan Toma, the birthplaces of the individuals responsible for the terrorist attacks in Madrid in 2004, and Casablanca in 2003 and 2007. Incorporating conversations with community members, on-site observation, and geo-spatial data, our fieldwork identifies the structural constraints affecting the quality of life of slum residents. Our findings deconstruct some of the fetishized representations of Sidi Moumen in Morocco and in the international press and provide insights into the shortcomings of development initiatives aimed to improve living standards of slum residents.

Sidi Moumen est un arrondissement au sud-est de Casablanca souvent représenté comme le berceau de groupe “intégriste” magrébin. Notre projet analyse les conditions socio-économiques de deux bidonvilles, Douar Rhamna et Karyan Toma, qui sont les lieux de naissance des individus impliqués dans les attentats de Madrid en 2004 et de Casablanca en 2003 et en 2007. Nos recherches incorporent des conversations avec les résidents de l´arrondissement, nos observations personnelles sur le terrain ainsi que des donnés géo-spatiales. En analysant les contraintes structurelles affectant l’ascension sociale des résidents, notre travail veille à déconstruire les représentations essentialistes des bidonvilles de Sidi Moumen. De plus, nous avons cerné l’ensemble des défauts des initiatives de développement visant à améliorer la vie des résidents.

Morocco 2012

This year, students of Sciences Po Paris in Menton will have the opportunity to travel to Morocco and deepen their knowledge about this key actor of the Mediterranean. Its geostrategic specificities along with its dynamic cultural, socio-political and economic developments make Morocco a fascinating yet seldom truly understood country. The unique model it sets forth in the context of the “Arab Spring” and the peculiar constitutional reforms it undergoesmake the time particularly ripe for such an academic endeavour. Starting from November work willbegin on our student projects, and all our efforts will be focused on conducting a successful study trip and symposium.
